La contaminación constituye la causa ambiental más importante de enfermedad y muerte prematura en el mundo actual. Se estima que las enfermedades causadas por la contaminación fueron la causa de 9 millones de muertes prematuras en 2015 (un 16% del total de muertes de todo el mundo), es decir, tres veces más muertes que las debidas al sida, la tuberculosis y la malaria juntas, y 15 veces más que las causadas por todas las guerras y otras formas de violencia. En los países más gravemente afectados, las enfermedades asociadas a la contaminación son responsables de más de una de cada cuatro muertes.
